Web services are Internet-based software components published using standard interface description languages and universally available through the Internet via uniform communication protocols. They can be discovered, invoked and composed dynamically using non-proprietary mechanisms, while each service can still be implemented in a black-box manner. Architectures based on web services (also known as service-oriented architectures or SOA) overcome major limitations of traditional Web/software development and evolution as they are at the crossing of distributed computing and loosely coupled systems. While tightly coupled software systems have proved to be adequate for usual business information systems, loosely coupled software systems can be more flexible and probably more appropriate for actual e-business applications. Loose coupling and late binding paradigm makes it easier for a given system to interact and collaborate with other systems (possibly legacy systems).

E-business companies have recently begun to explore the use of web services technologies within their e-business context, as there is real demand for services on demand and just-in-time integration. Despite the mentioned advantages, companies seem to be slow to deploy service-oriented architectures and there are several problems and challenges facing this new technology. Examples are: few documented real-life cases exist; standards for exploiting and using web services are still immature or non-existing; and heterogeneity in e-services constrains wide deployment of related technology and hinders inter-operability.

There are many workshops and conferences around the world that are dedicated to web services and related topics, however the assessment of the potential impact of web services on business information systems is often reduced to technical aspects. The underlying motivation for this proposed workshop is to adopt a business and an organizational perspective on web services so that to explore and investigate all managerial problems related to the usage and adoption of web services. The workshop will provide a forum for discussion and interaction among researchers and practitioners from research and industry in order to address the mentioned issues.

This workshop is organized by the French association AIM "Association Information and Management". AIM federates teachers, researchers and practitioners in the Information Systems domain and its purpose is to promote debates about I.S. within the French Speaking World. It constitutes an exhange hub for all those who teach, evaluate, design and implement I.S.
